Outlander stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe have both landed major parts in two separate movies, which means they are both making a move from the small screen to the silver screen and leaving fans wondering if their new schedules will delay season five. Could there be a year-long “droughtlander” pushing the fifth season to 2020?
According to the Radio Times, Heughan will be swapping his historic 18th-century Scottish costume for a role in the comic book universe in the new Vin Diesel superhero flick Bloodshot from Sony. Also joining the cast will be Michael Sheen and Baby Driver star Eiza Gonzalez.
Diesel stars as Bloodshot, a soldier who is fatally injured, but then cutting-edge nanotechnology brings him back to life. He then goes on a mission to round up “harbingers,” a group of super-powered outcasts.
Heughan will also star alongside Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon and Mila Kunis in The Spy Who Dumped Me, which comes to theaters in August.
As for Balfe, she will be in the untitled Ford versus Ferrari project from Fox that also will star Matt Damon, Noah Jupe, and Christian Bale. The film will focus on the competition between the two auto companies to win the 1966 Le Mans world championship.
Outlander, the time-traveling drama that made Heughan and Balfe famous, will return to Starz and Amazon Prime Video this November for season four, and the network has already renewed it for a fifth and sixth season.
In the past, Outlander has filmed during the winter and spring, and then in summer comes the press tour with the season premiere in the fall. So, it looks like Heughan and Balfe would have a short window later this summer and fall to work on their new projects before returning to Scotland to shoot season five of Outlander.
But, if either of their film schedules doesn’t fit into that time frame, it is possible there could be a delay when it comes to shooting season five. It looks like fans will just have to wait and see if it Heughan and Balfe’s new schedules will cause the show to make some changes when it comes to the season five premiere date. But, before we worry about that, we still have an almost six-month “droughtlander” before season four begins.
Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe return in Season 4 of Outlander this November on Starz.
