In a new fan poll about who should play the next James Bond after Daniel Craig leaves the long-running 007 movie franchise, Outlander star Sam Heughan ended up being the top choice. After over 261,000 votes, Heughan beat out Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, and John Boyega in the poll, and the actor posted the results on his Instagram.
Heughan posted that he was the fans’ top choice to be the next James Bond, and he joked that the results should mean the job is his.
“Thank you!” wrote Heughan. “I mean, if the fans vote then must be true…right? RIGHT?”
Earlier this month Heughan debuted his new James Bond-type look, which was a dramatic new haircut, and it set fans’ pulses racing all around the world. Since then, rumors have started to swirl that he could be up for the role of the super-savvy spy.
But even though some think that Heughan would be a perfect choice for the next James Bond, most of the rumors and speculation have swirled around Luther star Idris Elba. However, he just recently confirmed that he would not be playing the part.
The 007 rumors have followed Elba for years, and the 45-year-old actor fueled them himself recently when he posted a heavily filtered selfie on social media and wrote, “My name’s Elba. Idris Elba.”
But earlier this week, at the premiere for Yardie, which is Elba’s directorial debut, he said that he would definitely not be succeeding Daniel Craig. Good Morning Britain asked him if was looking at being the next Bond, and Elba flatly said, “No.”
Craig will be appearing in next year’s Bond 25, but the film just lost its director Danny Boyle because of “creative differences.”

But even though Elba won’t be playing the British spy in the movies, he will be returning as the popular television British law enforcement character Luther later this year. The role has earned Elba four Emmy nominations, and he is finally coming back for a fifth season.
So now that Elba has officially taken himself out of the running to be the next Bond, could it mean that Sam Heughan is now in the lead for the role? We will just have to wait and see.
