Starz has not officially picked up Season 5 of Outlander, but that isn’t stopping producers from getting a head start on the future season. During an appearance at PaleyFest last weekend, executive producer Ronald D. Moore revealed that his team has already started planning Season 5 and are deep into pre-production.
This is exciting news for Outlander fans, but it doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Outlander has been a major success for the network throughout its first three seasons and it’s only a matter of time before Starz green lights another year.

A few months ago, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht talked about the future of Outlander and admitted that everyone is looking forward to future seasons. With Season 4 of Outlander currently filming in Scotland, Moore is very confident that Season 5 will happen.
“We are certainly going to do it,” Moore shared at PaleyFest. “I have no doubt we are doing a Season 5.”
Starz has not announced an official premiere date for Season 4 of Outlander, which is expected to return this fall. Although it might seem a little early to get a head start on Season 5, planning this far out is completely normal for the show.
According to Harper’s Bazaar, Outlander designer Jon Gary Steele recently revealed that they always start planning the next season when they are mid-way through the current one. Steele also explained that Season 4 is a huge year in terms of production design, so getting a jump start on Season 5 is important if they want to keep everything on schedule.
So far, Outlander has adapted one of Diana Gabaldon’s books per season, though that formula could change moving forward. Moore teased that they have talked about combining and splitting some of the books for future seasons.
That hasn’t happened yet, but Moore admitted that they like to keep an open mind and will do whatever makes them comfortable. As far as Season 5 is concerned, we know that it will be based on Gabaldon’s book, The Fiery Cross. Whether or not it will be combined with the author’s sixth book, A Breath of Snow, is yet to be determined.

In the meantime, fans are looking forward to seeing Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) back in action for Season 4, which is based on Gabaldon’s novel, Drums of Autumn. The story follows the couple as they start new lives for themselves in America and face a completely new set of challenges.
Season 4 of Outlander is rumored to return this fall to Starz.
