Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) are looking for a fresh start when Outlander returns to Starz later this year. In Season 4, the time travelling couple will be setting up roots in Colonial America after being shipwrecked at the end of last season. Jamie and Claire’s new chapter will be exciting to watch unfold, but it won’t be without its share of challenges.
One of the big challenges includes Jamie and Claire building their future home on Fraser’s Ridge and their interactions with local Native Americans. A few months ago, producers put out a large casting call for Native American actors to join the show in Scotland, Outlander’s primary filming location.
Over 100 Canadians from the First Nation answered the call and will play an important role in the upcoming season. While most of the actors will play extras, some of the parts are speaking roles.

According to Express, executive producer Mathew B. Roberts recently opened up about featuring Native American roles in Season 5. Roberts revealed that his production team has worked hard to re-create the atmosphere in early Colonial America and make the sets as authentic as possible.
This includes teaching actors traditional skills, like hand weaving and building canoes, all to make the show look more realistic.
“To populate that world, we have welcomed a great team from Canada to play both the speaking and supporting roles of the Cherokee and Mohawk Nations in Outlander season four,” Roberts added.
We still don’t know how Jamie and Claire will interact with the native populations but they will definitely experience challenges on that front. In fact, new photos from the set feature an assembly of Native Americans talking around a camp fire.
The actors look very serious in the scene, which probably doesn’t bode well for the Outlander couple, who are looking to establish themselves in the New World.

Season 4 of Outlander is based on the popular novel by Diana Gabaldon, Drums of Autumn. In addition to interacting with the local populace, Jamie and Claire will reunite with their daughter, Brianna (Sophie Skelton), this season.
Jamie’s reunion with Brianna is easily one of the most anticipated moments of the upcoming season and marks a major turning point for her story.
Filming for the new season of Outlander is currently underway in Scotland, the show is expected to return sometime in November.
