Outlander fans have grown to love Sam Heughan’s portrayal of Jamie Fraser on the hit fantasy drama, and author Diana Gabaldon is no different. With Season 4 of Outlander only a few months away, Gabaldon recently talked about casting Heughan and how he is pretty much exactly how she imagined Jamie.
Gabaldon talked about her series during a panel discussion for The Great American Read, a program put on by PBS. Gabaldon was asked a slew of questions during the interview, including one about how her characters in the books stack up to the actors on the show. Gabaldon admitted that a lot of the characters look different on the show than she imagined in her book, with the exception of Heughan.

When producers sent Gabaldon Heughan’s audition tape, she looked up pictures of him and wasn’t sure he was the right fit. She also had doubts about his previous work, which was limited, and thought the images of him were strange. But that all changed when she watched the audition.
According to Collider, Gabaldon revealed that she knew Heughan was perfect for the role around ten seconds into the audition tape.
“He appeared, and in five seconds into it, I was saying he doesn’t look anything like his photos,” Gabaldon shared. “Five seconds more, he was gone, and it was just Jamie Fraser right here.”
"Well over six feet tall, broad in proportion, and of striking feature. He was a far cry from the grubby horse-handler I was accustomed to, and…….. he knew it."

Gabaldon is currently in the middle of finishing the ninth book in her hit Outlander series. She is also re-reading the eighth book in the series, Written In My Own Heart’s Blood, in preparation for the next book.
The television show just finished production on Season 4, which corresponds to Gabaldon’s fourth book, Drums of Autumn.
As far as Heughan is concerned, he has had a busy year so far. Along with filming the new season of Outlander, the actor is gearing up for the release of his newest movie The Spy Who Dumped Me. Heughan recently participated in a promotional tour for the film and talked about the possibility of becoming the next James Bond.
Heughan joked that he was given a car and tuxedo for The Spy Who Dumped Me, both of which could be re-used if he was cast as the next Bond. Given his work on Outlander so far, we’re pretty sure Heughan would make a great 007.
Fans can watch Diana Gabaldon’s full interview when PBS airs The Great American Read on September 11. Catch Sam Heughan along with Caitriona Balfe on Season 4 of Outlander, which is scheduled to premiere in November on Starz.
