Outlander is gearing up for the premiere of Season 4. The series just released some new behind-the-scenes photos – including a few pics of the Fraser’s beloved dog Rollo – and announced an official premiere date. When will the cast of Outlander return to action?
Starz announced that Outlander will debut its fourth season on November 4. The season will feature 13 episodes and is based on the 4th novel in Diana Gabaldon’s series, Drums of Autumn. This year, we’ll follow Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) as they establish new lives for themselves in the American colonies.
While they set down roots, the time-traveling couple will face quite a few obstacles in the New World, including the show’s latest villain, Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speelers). Fans will also get to see more of Claire’s daughter, Brianna (Sophie Skelton), as she travels back in time to reunite with her parents.
Apart from Jamie and Claire’s journey, fans will finally be introduced to one of the book’s most beloved character: Rollo. In the novels, Rollo is a pet dog of the Frasers who is also part wolf. According to Entertainment Weekly, the crew of Outlander started training a couple of Northern Inuit dogs to play Rollo back in Season 3. They started early so the puppies would be ready to go when filming for Season 4 got underway.
A spokesperson for the show characterized Rollo as being an erratic dog who “gets into trouble, often sticking his large, wet nose into places it doesn’t belong.”
The behind-the-scenes photos of Rollo in action include a few shots of the dog with Ian (John Bell). As readers know, Ian won Rollo playing cards in North Carolina. The two developed a strong bond as Ian grew up and Rollo quickly became a staple in the Fraser household.
As far as the training goes, Gabaldon revealed that the dogs learned how to carry packs and growl on command. She doesn’t, however, believe they were trained to properly hunt, like Rollo did for the Frasers in the books. Even still, it’s great to see producers include Rollo on the show, especially considering his close ties with Young Ian.
Season 4 of Outlander will premiere Nov. 4 on Starz. Filming for Season 5 of the series is expected to begin early next year.
