Gymnast McKayla Maroney has revealed that she too was the victim of sexual abuse when she was barely a teen. The Olympian confessed she was just 13 years old when the team’s medic molested her for the first time. Apparently, the nightmare continued for years!
The now 21-year-old recalled how she found herself in the man’s hotel room once, scared that she was going to die!
McKayla took to social media to share her experience with the world: ‘I was molested by Dr. Larry Nassar, the team doctor for the US Women’s National Gymnastics Team, and Olympic Team. Dr. Nassar told me that I was receiving ‘medically necessary treatment that he had been performing on patients for over 30 years.’ It started when I was 13, at one of my first National Team training camps, and it did not end until I left the sport. It seemed whenever and wherever this man could find the chance, I was ‘treated.’’
According to reports, other Olympic athletes have also accused the same doctor of touching them inappropriately, some claiming he put his hands in their vaginas for no reason.
Maroney went on to recall the scariest night of her life.
She was 15 and was returning from a competition in Tokyo.
The medical specialist gave her a sleeping pill for the flight, and upon waking up, she found herself in the man’s hotel room for yet another ‘treatment,’ thinking she was going to die.
The gymnast’s confession comes after the huge Harvey Weinstein scandal exploded and a hashtag encouraging women to speak out was made – #MeToo.
Referencing the Hollywood producer, Maroney explained that sexual harassment tends to happen not only in the film industry but pretty much everywhere there is a position of power.
