As we have reported previously, there were rumors that Disney might choose to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia in the upcoming Star Wars movies.
However, Star Wars producer Lucasfilm denied the validity of the previous statements.
“We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess Leia Organa,” said the producing team.
The statement was released on Friday and it assured fans that a CGI version of Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia is not going to be added in the movies.
“We don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address,” Lucasfilm wrote on the official Star Wars site. “We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa.”
Of course, the speculations were not exactly unfounded – CGI versions of both Fisher’s A New Hope-era Princess Leia and the return of late actor Peter Cushing’s Moff Tarkin in Rogue One were enough to make the fans believe they would bring her back on the big screen despite Carrie Fisher passing away in December.
Fisher’s death certainly will force Disney and Lucasfilm to change their plans for the upcoming Star Wars release coming in 2019.
Lucasfilm strongly denied all the rumors, by stating:
“Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars.”
Last week, the production team and creators of the Star Wars franchise had a meeting to discuss the course of action in the aftermath of Fisher’s death. Although CGI was an option, according to visual effects supervisor Michael Fink, “we have seen moments of success but not full performances.”
It seems like, in the end, the production decided to go with the story in a direction that does not involve Princess Leia.
