Nina Dobrev is returning to Vampire Diaries for the series finale, which will air on March 10. The 28-year-old actress made the announcement on Instagram Thursday, and fans could not be happier. Dobrev left the CW series two seasons ago to focus on other projects. She was part of the cast for the first six seasons. However, a contractual agreement had allowed to return for a series finale. The Canadian acting sensation wrote in her Instagram post with: “I know it’s Thursday, but this is not a TBT. #BackOnSet #TVDForever.”
Julie Plec, the showrunner and developer, was pleased with the news. She shared: “I’m thrilled to bring this show to an end the way we always intended — with Nina back to help us say goodbye.” Executive producer Kevin Williamson sang the same tune and stated: “I’m so excited to have Nina back to ensure our farewell episode is truly epic!”
The bosses behind Vampire Diaries always made it a priority to have the actress back for the big finale. They fought hard to make it happen. When Dobrev left the show, her character, Elena Gilbert, was put into a magical sleep. This should make it a little bit easier for the writers to explain her return.
Rumors had linked Dobrev’s departure from the show to the end of her relationship with Ian Somerhalder, her co-star, which ended in 2013 after three years. However, there was never any evidence to back this up. Moreover, she always denied those claims. The 38-year-old actor is now married to actress Nikki Reed.
Since leaving Vampire Diaries, Dobrev was able to land a few movie roles including XXX: Return of Xander Cage and The Final Girls.
