Previously, Nicki Minaj promised to pay The Cosby Show actor, Geoffrey Owens, $25,000 after pictures surfaced of him bagging groceries at Trader Joes, sparking a backlash. Hollywood entertainers and the general public accused Fox News of “job-shaming” Mr. Owens, who, at one point in his career, was a small-screen star.
Following the scandal, and after Minaj’s dispute with Cardi B at New York Fashion Week, Minaj pledged to donate twenty-five grand to Geoffrey, and she finally delivered on that promise.
Sources close to Minaj claim she recently reached out to him personally and sent a check for $25,000. Nicki said on her Queen Radio show that she intended on giving him money after images of him went viral on social media.
Nevertheless, Owens took the money and donated it to a cause close to his heart. Geoffrey said to Us Weekly that he was giving the money to the Actor’s Fund in memoriam of Earle Hyman.
Earle played Mr. Cosby’s father on The Cosby Show. Geoffrey, in his statement, said he was extraordinarily grateful for Minaj’s donation, and wanted to pay it forward.

#NickiMinaj has paid up her promised $25,000 to former 'Cosby Show' actor #GeoffreyOwens, and he's taking the money … and paying it forward. __________________________ Nicki's team recently reached out and sent a check to Owens. After she vowed on her #QueenRadio show to give him $25k in response to someone attempting to shame him with a pic of him working at Trader Joe's. _________________________ Owens made the decision to donate the money, in full, to a cause near and dear to his heart and acting career. He said, "I would like to give this donation of 25k to the Actor’s Fund in memory of the late, great Earle Hyman — who played Cosby’s father, ‘Russell’, on “The Cosby Show” — who lived his last many years and died at the Actors’ Home, (funded and run by the Actor’s Fund). I am extremely grateful to Nicki Minaj for enabling struggling actors to continue pursuing their dreams." ____________________________ Nicki responded, "I'm happy to be a part of a great cause. I wish Geoffrey much success and want him to know how loved he is. Rest in Peace to Earle Hyman." Owens has gotten a wave of job offers since the photo surfaced, the most significant being a 10-episode gig on Tyler Perry's "The Haves and the Have Nots #blackexcellence✊🏾 #spreadlove 💕
“I’m happy to be a part of a great cause,” the Queen rapper remarked. As it was previously reported, Owens received a litany of job offers after the images surfaced.
He landed a gig on Tyler Perry’s The Haves and The Have Nots, which will last for ten episodes. While Minaj’s actions were praised by many, some on social media accused her of engaging in damage control after she and Cardi B got into a fight.
Fans accused Nicki of being “jealous” of Cardi’s success, as well as attempting to thwart her career, as Remy Ma once said in the past.
Other female rappers, including Remy, claimed Nicki tried to black-ball her through telling other artists not to work with her, otherwise Nicki will no longer collaborate with them. Whether or not this is true, hasn’t been confirmed.
