We’re only a few months away before the premiere of Kurt Sutter’s newest series, Mayans MC. FX has been releasing a slew of trailers to get fans hyped for the Sons of Anarchy spin-off, and its latest offering might be its best yet. The new trailer features a nice tribute to Charlie Hunnam’s Jax Teller, but it also reveals that Hunnam will not be back in action when the show premieres this fall.
The trailer shows a group of Mayans riding along a highway in California. The bikers pass a roadside tribute to Jax, who was killed in the Season 7 finale of Sons of Anarchy. The marker clearly indicates that the series will take place after Jax’s death, which means Hunnam will not be reprising the role – at least not in this series. But it was also a nice tribute to Hunnam’s character and a great way to drum up support for the spin-off.
According to Cinema Blend, Jax’s tribute in the trailer could mean that Sutter and co-producer Elgin James are planning on bringing a few characters back from the original show. We already know that Emilio Rivera is reprising his role as Marcus Alvarez, the president of Mayans MC.
Beyond that, we don’t know how many Sons of Anarchy characters will appear in the spin-off, but it is a promising sign to see Jax’s name mentioned in a trailer.
Unfortunately, the roadside tribute does indicate that Hunnam will not appear as Jax on the new show. There is still a possibility that Jax makes an appearance, but it would be limited to a flashback of some kind.
Even still, Mayans MC is bringing together a pretty dynamic cast, including the likes of Edward James Olmos, John Ortiz, Richard Cabral, Sarah Bolger, Michael Irby, J.D. Pardo, and Jacqueline Obradors, so there’s still plenty to be excited about.
Mayans MC is set after the events in the final season of Sons of Anarchy. The show follows Pardo’s character, Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes, a prospect in the club who is trying to forge a new identity as an outlaw. The series is set along the border of Mexico and California.
In addition to the trailers, Sutter has shared a few photos from the set of Mayans MC. This includes several shots of the cast members in action. If the photos and promo materials are anything to go by, it looks like we’re for another great series from the Sons of Anarchy creator.
Mayans MC is set to premiere on September 4 on FX.
