With less than a month before release, Fifty Shaders Darker — the sequel to 2015’s sultry Fifty Shades of Grey — is picking up a lot of buzz online. It’s been two weeks since the latest trailer hit the internet, but in that time it’s become the most talked-about trailer on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms.
The new Fifty Shades Darker trailer has been viewed over 9 million times on YouTube. Social media tracker comScore reports that 1.12 million conversations have been sparked online for the new movie. In the past week, over 152,000 conversations were generated, easily beating Disney’s Cars 3 trailer, which was the second most talked-about new trailer.
Both Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker were adapted from the best-selling books by E.L. James. Over 125 million copies of the Fifty Shades trilogy have been sold so far. The original movie made over $500 million at the global box office, something the studio is clearly hoping to duplicate with the sequel.
The first film ended with Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) leaving Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), after finding their arrangement untenable. In the sequel, Christian attempts to win Anastasia back while demons from his past begin to resurface.
Fifty Shades Darker and the upcoming third film, Fifty Shades Freed, were filmed back-to-back, with James Foley (Glengarry Glen Ross, House of Cards) taking over directing duties. Kim Basinger, Hugh Dancy, Rita Ora, and Tyler Hoechlin join the franchise in Fifty Shades Darker.
Last week, Universal Pictures also revealed the track listings for the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack. In addition to the previously announced song “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” by Zayn Malik and Taylor Swift, the soundtrack features new tracks by John Legend and Sia, plus a collaboration between Nick Jonas and Nicki Minaj.
Fifty Shades Darker will arrive in theaters in the United States on February 10, 2017.
