Though it’s only been available on streaming service Netflix for a week, the romantic comedy Set It Up is poised to be one of the best, most well-received romantic comedies in recent history. In just a week, the buzz around this movie has been substantial. Many are calling it the first official sleeper hit.
The rom-com stares Glenn Powell and Zoey Deutch and also has key roles by Taye Diggs and Lucy Liu.
Since the movie was released, Deutch has been labeled this generation’s Meg Ryan, which is extremely high praise.
This movie really has everything in it. It has character growth, it has romance, it’s silly, funny and sweet. It does all of these things in equal and good measure.
What’s even more coincidental is that the movie was supposed to be cast much differently, with a bigger budget, a theatre release, and different actors at the helm.
In fact, Emilia Clarke of Game of Thrones fame was supposed to play Harper, the role now played by Deutch.
The reason that this didn’t come to be was due to timing scheduling conflicts with the hit HBO show.
Amy Poehler was originally going to be the character played by Lucy Liu.
One of the issues the creators had with Deutch as the main character is that Harper was originally written to be 28 years old.
Deutch was only 22 years old at the time. So they bumped the age down to 25 which Deutch believably portrays.
Everyone loves some tension and “will they, won’t they” energy surrounding a rom-com couple, but the chemistry between them was so clear that making them seem indifferent towards one another during their first meeting proved to be challenging.
Overall, the movie has already geared itself up for massive success, despite some hiccups along the way in pre-production.
