The actress is really involved in making a positive change in society, and she explains that her little ones, son Aleph, and daughter Amalia have motivated her to do it. Natalie Portman was in attendance at Variety’s Power of Women event, and while there, she talked to ET about her work with Time’s Up and her family.
‘Well I, I want a different world for my kids. I have a girl and a boy, and I want both to grow up with different ideas of opportunity, behavior, the options opened to them because boys and girls are really limited by the system that expects very, very specific things from both boys and girls. Everyone’s options are very limited because of this,’ she told the outlet.
Natalie also went on to explain how the way she understands the word ‘abuse’ has changed in time.
‘Yeah, well it was amazing how many things that I didn’t even categorize as abusive behavior. I thought it was [something that] made me upset or made me really uncomfortable.’
‘And now I think that all of this reckoning’s made me even go like, ‘Oh that was not just a bad date, it was an abusive date’, ‘That was not just an uncomfortable meeting, it was an abusive meeting’… And that has made me look at things differently and hopefully, it will prevent this kind of behavior when people, both men and women, are more aware of that.’
The actress was at the event to deliver a speech that was filled with encouragement for other women in the industry.
According to Variety, she stated: ‘Many men are behaving as if we live in a zero-sum game. That if women get the respect, the access and value that we deserve, they will lose. But we know about the message of the mammaries: That the more milk you give, the more you make.’
Portman explained that ‘The more love that you give, the more love you have. And the same can be said about fire. When you light somebody else’s torch with your own, you do not lose your fire, you just make more light and more heat. Light a woman’s torch. The light will grow and the heat will intensify for all of us.’ Preach!
