Mo’Nique, Lee Daniels, and Tyler Perry have been engaged in a battle of wits for a long time, but in the past few months, their feud has cooled down for the most part. However, the break amid their conflict didn’t last very long as the former actress recently released a conversation she had with the director.
In the recordings obtained by the organization, Rolling Out, Perry admitted that the reputation Mo’Nique had as someone who is difficult to work with was “unfair.”
Mo’Nique never received compensation for her role in the movie, Precious, something which Perry said he would correct. In the call, he says, “this is Tyler Perry talking,” and that any funds related to Precious coming in as a residual fund would go directly to Mo’Nique.
The director added, “whatever it is, I’m going to send it to you.” Later on in the conversation, Perry agreed that the studios should’ve compensated the actress for promoting the film overseas.
And the conversation shifted in tonality later on when Mo’Nique said that Perry had become too “Hollywood,” and she would prefer to speak with “Madea,” the character Perry is most known for portraying.
Her statements were a thinly veiled call-out of the director’s supposed lack of authenticity.
Mo’Nique said that he was speaking in “Tyler Perry” language, and the director laughed out loud, probably to assuage the awkward tension. The actress went on to imply that Tyler wasn’t being real, and ever since he gained his success, he lost that aspect of himself.
In the final audio recording, Perry said he hopes Mo’Nique can move on after he sends her payment. However, the director doesn’t say he’s sending money outright, he just states,” now, if that means that that’s what I need to do, you do that, and take it from a place of love.”
