Michelle Williams really wishes that talking openly about mental issues such as depression would be normalized. Today, during her co-hosting gig on The Talk, the singer decided to open up about her personal experience struggling with severe depression.
In fact, the 37-year-old revealed that, at the very peak of Destiny’s Child success, she was suicidal!
The star explained that she had been dealing with depression ever since she was 13 but never realized what it was until the age of 30!
‘I am in one of the top-selling female groups of all time, suffering from depression. I think at the age of 25, had I had a name to what I was feeling at the time, I would’ve disclosed that ‘I have been suffering from depression.’ When I disclosed it to our manager at the time [Mathew Knowles – Beyonce’s father], bless his heart, he was like, ‘You all just signed a multimillion-dollar deal. You are about to go on tour. What do you have to be depressed about?’’
Because of the man’s encouraging but also dismissive words, Williams reasoned with herself that maybe she was just really tired.
However, as time went on, she started to feel worse and worse to the point that she not only wanted out of the group but became suicidal.
The star took to social media to thank her loyal fans for the support after the show aired, noting that people should not be scared to reach out and ask for help.
