These days, Michelle Duggar is the poster child for deeply religious and conservative wives who believe in serving their husbands and having as many children as possible. But, the mom of twenty has a past that isn’t as squeaky clean as you might expect. Why has the Duggar matriarch attempted to cut ties with her family and distance herself from those who raised her?
According to The Hollywood Gossip, Duggar was a cheerleader in high school and didn’t follow the strict dress code she forces upon her own daughters. Duggar wore skirts well above the knee, and her cheerleader uniform barely covered her backside.
But, it wasn’t just her skirts that caused a commotion in her neighborhood. Apparently, her neighbors used to complain because she would mow her family’s lawn in a bikini.
Ironically, her parents were not big fans of her wardrobe and were always trying to get her to cover up her legs.
Apparently, Duggar has changed so much since marrying her husband, Jim Bob, that those who knew her back then don’t even recognize her.
“I’ve seen commercials for the show, but I never in a million years would’ve believed that’s Michelle,” says former classmate Joe Roblee.
The 51-year-old made some big changes when she met her future husband. The two married on July 21, 1984, after dating for just a few months. But even though she has tried to put the past behind her, it does pop up every once in a while.
Michelle and Jim Bob strictly forbid their children from having any physical contact with the opposite sex before they get married, but those who knew them way back when say that the Duggar parents did not follow the same strict rules.
But there is even more to the story. Not only did Michelle and Jim Bob get physical before walking down the aisle, but sources also say Jim Bob wasn’t her first boyfriend. A former high school friend says that Michelle was a popular cheerleader who dated many guys before Jim Bob.
In the first few years of their marriage, Jim Bob and Michelle even used birth control, but that is something they no longer believe in. In their first book, they confusingly wrote that the pill was to blame for Michelle suffering a miscarriage and that they didn’t realize that it can cause a woman to get pregnant, but then it can be aborted.
The Duggars and their twenty children are obviously extremely close, but Michelle maintains virtually no contact with the family that raised her. The Duggars have made no secret of their strong anti-gay beliefs, and Michelle has an openly gay sister named Evelyn Ruark. So we can assume that Ruark and her famous sibling aren’t particularly close.
Michelle’s high school friend, Sherri McFerrin, says that she has no interest in rekindling any kind of friendship since the reality star has turned into a “hateful bigot.” She says that Michelle was one of the sweetest people you could ever meet, but she has no idea what happened to her heart.
Michelle Duggar’s famous family returns with new episodes of Counting On Monday, February 26, on TLC.
