During this year’s Academy Awards, diversity was the central theme touched on by many of the presenters as well as nominees and winners, including Frances McDormand who recommended an inclusion rider. Michael B Jordan, the star of Black Panther, is just one of the stars to put the theory into practice, as the entertainer is leading the way in the adoption of the clause.
And while many aren’t aware of what an “inclusion rider” actually is, according to NPR, it’s a clause in a contract which demands a certain level of diversity within the project’s cast and crew.
Frances revealed to reporters after the award’s ceremony that even she didn’t know exactly what it was until recently. Frances said she “just found about this last week.”
In support of the women & men who are leading this fight, I will be adopting the Inclusion Rider for all projects produced by my company Outlier Society. I’ve been privileged to work with powerful woman & persons of color throughout my career & it’s Outlier’s mission to continue to create for talented individuals going forward. McDormand claimed it’s a sign of progress that changes are being made to the structures of the entertainment business. On Instagram, in a post which you can see above, Michael stated he would be adopting an inclusion rider within his production company, Outlier Society Productions.
The actor stated in his post that here on out, he would be implementing the rider into all of the contracts in future projects. It’s in support of the men and women who are currently fighting the battle for proportional representation in Hollywood.
Jordan stated his goal is to continue to create an easily defined path for other people of color who choose to succeed in the profession.
As you may know, the entertainment hub of America has been adamant on representation in recent months, especially after the case of Harvey Weinstein.
Celebrity Insider reported previously that Harvey took advantage of his power in the scene to allegedly abuse women and those who didn’t comply with his demands. Some of the most outspoken women in Weinstein’s case includes Rose McGowan and Asia Argento, both who suffered at the hands of the disgraced producer.
