In Michael Schulman’s 2016 unauthorized biography called Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep, Michal revealed that on the second day of filming Kramer Vs. Kramer, Hoffman allegedly slapped Meryl across the face and left a red mark.
According to the excerpt which was published in an issue of Vanity Fair, Robert Benton – who served as the movie’s director – heard the slap and watched Meryl charge onto the set afterward to play her role.
Hoffman hasn’t responded to the claims yet. However, there was a scene in Kramer vs. Kramer where Dustin had to slap Meryl, so there is a possibility that the two were rehearsing for the movie.
When speaking with The Times, Streep said Dustin did hit her, but it was part of the movie, so there was a “certain amount of forgiveness in that.” However, the actress acknowledged that these types of incidents will no longer take place because the culture is changing. The person must be warned first.
During her talk with reporters from The New York Times, Streep didn’t open up about the sexual harassment allegations against Dustin. After the charges came out, Dustin said they were “defamatory falsehoods.”
Back in November, the publication, Slate, unveiled an interview from 1979 where Streep claimed Hoffman touched her breast after they had been introduced to each other. According to the Academy Award-winning actress, while she was auditioning for a play that he was directing, he touched her inappropriately.
However, in response to the piece published many years ago, Meryl’s representative said the article was not an accurate representation of how it went down. She said there was an offense at the time; Dustin apologized for it, and Meryl accepted it, whatever it was.
As you may know, the claims against Hoffman are just one of many in recent weeks, after one girl claimed the actor/director inappropriately requested a foot massage while she worked as an intern. Another woman alleged that Dustin humiliated her several times on the set, but cast and crew members who were present at the time stated they didn’t remember such an altercation.
