Melania Trump underwent surgery on her kidney this week and is expected to remain in the hospital for a few more days. While Melania is expected to make a full recovery, President Donald Trump has yet to visit her in the hospital. Why isn’t Trump at Melania’s side?
White House officials revealed that Melania has been experiencing kidney problems for quite some time. Although many people were surprised to hear about her hospitalization, the procedure had been planned beforehand. On Monday morning, Melania was taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland where doctors performed the successful operation.

Trump did not visit his wife in the hospital during or after the surgery. He did speak to Melania before the operation and talked with doctors after they were finished. Trump was expected to stop by the hospital sometime this week, despite leaving Melania by herself all day Monday. Trump later tweeted that he was on his way to see Melania on Monday evening. He reportedly stayed for around an hour before returning to the White House.
“Successful procedure, she is in good spirits. Thank you to all of the well-wishers,” Trump wrote on Twitter.
The White House labeled Melania’s ailment a “benign kidney condition.” She is successfully recovering in the hospital and doctors expect her to be back to full health in no time, though she will likely remain under medical care for the rest of the week. Melania says she is looking forward to getting out of the hospital and continue her work with children.
Melania officially had what is called an embolization procedure. The operation inserts a material in the arteries that lead to the kidney, which helps block blood entering the organ from a benign tumor. Individuals who have this procedure are usually out of the hospital within a day or two at the most.

Melania is likely staying longer because of her position as first lady. The only side effects from the surgery are swelling and pain, though these usually subside within days after the operation.
A first lady has not been hospitalized since Nancy Reagan underwent a mastectomy back in 1987. Trump has not responded to the rumors that he left Melania sick and alone in the hospital.
The White House also has not released information as to why Melania Trump needed the procedure done, though she likely had a benign tumor that was bleeding into the kidney.
