The new Today Show anchor team of Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb are heading to South Korea to host the morning show’s first three hours live from the Winter Olympics next month, and Kathie Lee Gifford and Megyn Kelly are reportedly getting the short end of the stick. How will NBC deal with this temporary quirk in the broadcast schedule?
According to Radar Online, Gifford and Kelly will stay at home in New York City, leaving Gifford without a co-host for the fourth hour and Kelly with no hour to host at all.
As viewers know, Guthrie and Kotb usually host the first two hours of the program, with Kelly getting the third hour, and Gifford and Kotb hosting the fourth. Now the question is, with the Olympic coverage taking over the first three hours, will the network leave Kelly out completely and let Gifford host the fourth hour by herself?
“NBC doesn’t know what to do,” a production insider reveals. “They wanted to put Kathie Lee and Megyn together, but neither lady wants that.”
The source goes on to say that producers are considering giving Kelly the fourth hour by herself and leaving Gifford out, but fans can only imagine what the 64-year-old’s response would be to that move.
The network also has the option of letting Kelly stay home during the Olympic coverage, but then they would be paying her a ton of money to do nothing.
The Olympics are just weeks away, so NBC will have to figure these things out quickly and try to come up with a solution that doesn’t insult Kelly or Gifford.
After the games are over, there could be more shake-ups at the popular morning news program. Rumors are swirling that producers are considering moving Kelly ratings-challenged show back an hour and giving Kotb and Gifford the more attractive time slot.
Kelly’s poor numbers in the third hour have been an ongoing problem since her show began in September, and since the network fired Matt Lauer and replaced him with Kotb, it would make more sense for her to do the first two hours with Guthrie and the third hour with Gifford. Then, Kelly could wrap everything up in hour four.

No one knows if Kelly would be ok with the move, but we do know that she wasn’t happy with author Michael Wolff appearing on The Today Show last week. Per Page Six, she refused to host him during her hour because of the things the Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House author wrote about her in a Newsweek piece.
He wrote that Kelly was more mistrusted and reviled than anyone else in the news business, and called her “soulless, heartless, shameless, avaricious, etc.”
Megyn Kelly has not commented on her absence from the Winter Olympics.
