Megyn Kelly made quite a stir when she questioned Jane Fonda about cosmetic procedures she underwent. The incident in question took place on September 27, 2017, during an episode of Megyn Kelly Today. It was two days prior to the Netflix premiere of Our Souls at Night that reunited Jane Fonda with long-time collaborator and friend Robert Redford and had them doing television rounds and interviews. During an interview with Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, and Megyn Kelly, she directly asked Fonda about any cosmetic surgery or procedures she underwent. It was noticed by many and social media quickly pointed out that Kelly did not ask Robert Redford any questions regarding cosmetic surgery. You may see the interview and the comments as they took place on NBC in the video players below.
While the response to the interview was swift and severe, (the original video on YouTube is peppered with comments slamming Kelly as an interviewer), it wasn’t until Jane Fonda made a reference to the interview that the controversy reignited.
First, Jane Fonda and co-star Lily Tomlin appeared on the Today show to promote the fourth season of their Netflix series Grace and Frankie.
During the interview, Lily Tomlin joked that she had known Jane Fonda since before her first facelift. Jane Fonda retorted, “Let’s not go there. Who are you, Megyn Kelly?”
The video clip from the interview went viral and people began talking about the interview again. The subject received renewed attention when Jane Fonda gave an interview to Variety.
Fonda spoke with Variety about her documentary that just premiered at Sundance Jane Fonda in Five Acts and during the exclusive interview discussed Megyn Kelly and revealed her personal feelings regarding her skills as in interviewer.
Her comments and the interview went viral and brought Megyn Kelly and the September interview back into the spotlight.
On Monday, January 22, 2018, Megyn Kelly addressed the controversy and made her own statement regarding Jane Fonda.
Fast-forward to 1:41 in the video below to hear Megyn Kelly address the issues of cosmetic surgery and procedures in regards to Jane Fonda’s graceful aging.
Speaking to Variety before the January 20, 2018, premiere of Jane Fonda in Five Acts, Variety asked Jane Fonda if she would go back and be interviewed by Megyn Kelly again. She said she would and was then asked if the cosmetic surgery questions upset her.
Here is Jane Fonda’s response.
“No. It wasn’t like I was upset. I was stunned. It was so inappropriate. It showed that she’s not that good an interviewer. But if she comes around and learns her stuff, sure.”

On Monday, January 22, 2018, Megyn Kelly addressed the controversy on her NBC show Today. She brought up past interviews with Jane where she openly spoke about undergoing plastic surgery. Kelly addressed the issue that she felt her question was on target and appropriate.
Jane Fonda and Robert Redford were promoting a movie about aging and Kelly felt the question was needed. It was after Megyn Kelly defended her line of questioning that some questioned her response.
Not only did Megyn make her point about why she felt the line of questioning was appropriate for the interview, but she brought up Jane Fonda’s controversial past.
In 1972, during the Vietnam war, Jane Fonda visited North Vietnam and photos were taken of her posing with the enemy. She was labeled a traitor and to this day, many American servicemen and women, as well as patriots consider her an enemy of the country and call her by the name “Hanoi Jane.”
Jane Fonda has apologized for the photo and states that she was naive about the war and what it would mean to U.S. troops for her to be there.
Still, there are many who will never forgive Jane Fonda for her actions in 1972.
What do you think? Was Megyn Kelly right in bringing up Jane Fonda’s North Vietnamese trip? Did she sink to a new low to fight back against Fonda’s comments that she is not a good interviewer? What are your thoughts on the issue?
