While attending Northwestern University back in 1999, Meghan Markle, now 36, was in a relationship with Steve Lepore. The college boyfriend of the future royal reacted to her engagement ahead of Meghan’s May wedding with Prince Harry.
‘Best of luck to her and Prince Harry,’ the man, who is a Virginia Military Institute basketball coach, said.
Apparently, he and Meghan broke up when he transferred to another university.
But even though they have both clearly moved on from that romance, one source claimed she might never have forgotten her college boyfriend.
‘They say you never forget your first love, and that holds true for Meghan. Ultimately, I do not think it would have worked out in the long run, but she was heartbroken just the same. He was not royalty, but to have your first real, adult romance end suddenly, that is something that stays with you,’ our insider revealed.
After a year and a half of secretly dating, Prince Harry and the American actress announced their engagement.
They even gave a joint interview during which they opened up about their romance and plans for the future.
Markle, who has also been married before, is definitely leaving all of her past relationships behind to start anew alongside Harry.
As for how she feels about putting an end to her acting career in order to marry a royal, she claimed she doesn’t believe she lost anything.
‘What has been exciting is the transition of this out of my career and into the role of the causes that have been important to me. I can focus on the causes that I care about. I do not see it as giving anything up. I see it as a change. It is a new chapter. I have been working on my show for seven years. I am very fortunate to be able to have that longevity on a series,’ Meghan explained, adding that she is really excited to now start working on the same team with Harry.
