A lot of little girls fantasize about becoming a princess, but the reality of being a royal is not always all it’s cracked up to be. When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry this weekend, her new status forced her to sacrifice key parts of her life and lifestyle.
To begin with, the actress had to give up her name, and everyone must now address her as either the Duchess of Sussex or Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales. The 36-year-old also had to leave her acting career behind after spending the last seven years starring on the USA network drama Suits.
In Markle’s final episode of the show, her character, Rachel Zane, got married and presumably went off to live happily ever after.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex would like to thank everyone who took part in the celebrations of their wedding on Saturday. They feel so lucky to have been able to share their day with all those gathered in Windsor and also all those who watched the wedding on television across the UK, Commonwealth, and around the world #RoyalWedding
Not long after she started dating Prince Harry, the Duchess shut down her three-year-old lifestyle blog The Tig, a project she called her “little engine that could.”
“What began as a passion project evolved into an amazing community of inspiration, support, fun, and frivolity,” Markle wrote before shutting down the blog. “You’ve made my days brighter and filled this experience with so much joy.”
She also encouraged those in her Tig community to find moments of discovery, to keep laughing and taking risks, and to be the change you want to see in the world.
In addition to ending her blog, the Duchess of Sussex also said goodbye to her social media accounts, including her Instagram. And, unknown to many, Markle also shut down her clothing line in Canada, and she also gave up her Toronto apartment ahead of her move to London.
But, probably her worst loss of all is that of her prized pooch, Bogart. The shepherd-lab mix had to stay behind in Toronto and is now living with a friend. He reportedly is too old and too big to make the move across the ocean.
However, she did keep her beagle, Guy, and he is currently adjusting to his new life in Kensington Palace.
Markle has had to leave a lot behind, but she is also starting a new chapter in her life, and her royal status is allowing her to focus on issues that are important to her, including the environment, climate change, and economic equality. However, according to sources, she is using her passion for those issues to enforce a rule on her new husband – a two-child limit.
The former Suits star is a “modern woman” who cares about the planet’s resources and limiting the number of children she and Harry has is another way for her to show how much she cares about the Earth and to be environmentally friendly.
Meghan Markle made her first public appearance as the Duchess of Sussex this morning.
