Meghan Markle is making her own rules. The Duchess of Sussex recently broke more royal protocols during a royal appearance in London — and not even Queen Elizabeth can tell her no. The former actress surprised fans by attending the British Fashion Awards, where she presented an award for the best British Womenswear Designer of the Year.
Markle rocked a black Givenchy dress for the ceremony, which included an off-the-shoulder design. She completed her outfit with a gold bracelet and a pair of earrings.
Although the former Suits star looked stunning in the gown, she actually broke a royal protocol with her choice of nail polish.

“I recently read that the culture of fashion has changed from where it was once ‘cool to be cruel’ to now where it is ‘cool to be kind’. I feel especially proud to announce tonight’s winner, who is a British designer leading on the global stage with vision and creativity, but also with incredible kindness.” – The Duchess of Sussex presents @clarewaightkeller with her award for British Designer of the Year – Womenswear at the @britishfashioncouncil Fashion Awards. The award recognised Clare Waight Keller’s formidable contribution as a British fashion designer to the industry this year and was decided by a panel of over 2,000 international industry experts. Clare is the Creative Director of International fashion house @givenchyofficial.
The actress opted for black nails to match her dress, a move that Elizabeth and Kate Middleton would never go for.
According to Radar Online, there is an unspoken rule that members of the royal family should only wear nude or clear nail polish in public. Light pink is also acceptable, but black is a major no-no.
As a comparison, Elizabeth has worn the same shade of nail polish since the late ’80s.
Markle, of course, has broken plenty of royal protocols in the past. Most of the rules she has broken involve fashion, though she did cross her legs in public once instead of doing the Duchess slant.
Apart from the nail polish, Markle also jumped in the photo booth at the event with Rosamund Pike and Claire Waight Keller. Participating in a photo booth is not a common occurrence at royal events, but Markle did not seem to mind.

Keller won the British designer award and had nothing but good things to say about Markle during her acceptance speech.
“I got to know Meghan on such a personal level,” Keller shared. “To have someone like that trust you in an incredible moment in their life is something that is just the most unbelievable honor.”
Meghan Markle also showed off her growing baby bump at the event. The Duchess is expected to give birth to her first child with Prince Harry sometime in the spring.
