It has become pretty apparent that the Queen is very fond of Meghan Markle. So much so that she even let her beloved beagle, named Guy to hitch a ride with the newest royal before her wedding to Prince Harry last month.
While a lot of people were against the younger of the two princes marrying the American actress for pretty discriminatory reasons, such as her nationality, racial background and even the fact that she is a divorcee, Queen Elizabeth II was never one of them.
Yesterday, Markle and the Queen attended their very first engagement together without Harry being present.
During the royal event, their bond was pretty obvious.
While enjoying a performance by local Cheshire students called Bringing Communities Together: Halton’s river crossings over the ages, Meghan, and the usually stoic royal engaged in a few laughs and chatted away, happily.
Afterward, there was this situation when the Queen encouraged Meghan to enter their waiting car ahead of her!
As you may know, one of the Queen’s responsibilities is vetoing royal family marriages to make sure none of them would ’diminish’ their status.
For instance, King Edward VIII had no choice but to give up the throne to marry twice-divorced American actress Wallis Simpson.
In addition, the Queen did stop her sister, Princess Margaret, from marrying Royal Air Force Capt. Peter Townsend, because he was a divorce.
Considering that Markle was in the same situation, there really was a reason for concern that her marriage to Prince Harry would be blocked.
But we hear that she approved of the wedding long before she signed the official scroll.
Royal expert Katie Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight that ‘Because when you look at Meghan on paper she isn’t what you might expect of a conventional royal fiancée and that she is American, she is a well-known face. She has filmed some pretty racy sex scenes that we have all seen in Suits. Everything from being a divorcée to being a little older than Prince Harry, to coming from a mixed heritage family, you might wonder if the Queen being from a certain generation and, of course, being the queen might’ve been concerned.’
Apparently, not really!
‘Everything I heard from sources I spoke with was that she really felt from the beginning that Markle was a positive presence in Prince Harry’s life. That she made him happy and that she was very supportive.’
Her education, activism, and charity work, the fact that she has served as an advocate for UN Women, and traveled to India not too long ago as an ambassador for World Vision among many other qualities made her more suited for being part of the royal family than people saw at a first glance.
‘When Harry asked his grandmother for her blessing in the fall of 2017, she gave it without hesitation. Despite rumors, there was no issue over Meghan’s racial heritage or concerns she was older or divorced. Exceptionally close to her grandson, the Queen trusts Harry,’ Nicholl added.
For the event they attended together this week, the Queen showed her affection towards Meghan by gifting her a gorgeous pair of diamond and pearl earrings – a smaller version of her own!
