Yesterday, we reported that UFC President Dana White offered a $50 million split for the Mayweather-McGregor – each athlete getting $25 million, and money from the PPV’s sold. We also stated that we would have to wait for a response from Mayweather Jr., as we were skeptical that Mayweather would accept the deal due to the fact that he was used to making way above that figure. Well, we didn’t have to wait long for a response.
Mayweather literally laughed off the offer. A reporter caught up with Mayweather Jr. in his car, and asked him what he thought about White’s offer. In fact, Mayweather Jr. didn’t wait for the question to be asked before he said that Dana is a f***ing comedian. He then showed off the Hublot he bought, asking the reporter to get it. The reporter thought it was a nice watch, but seemed oblivious to the point Mayweather was trying to make.
Mayweather asked the reporter if he knew how much it cost, and then proceeded to ask him to look up the price. The watch was a limited Hublot Laferrari, which retails for around $220k and can run up to $350k. The reporter tried to get a clear answer on whether he accepted the deal in a last ditch attempt but Mayweather simply asked him to look at his watch. Mayweather then fist bumped the reporter and sped off.
The message was very clear. Dana White’s offer is way too low. Floyd was clearly insulted by the offer, basically suggesting the offer was just a little bit more than the watch on his wrist.
We don’t blame Mayweather for his response. Mayweather made at least $220 million in his fight against Pacquiao. The match against McGregor is comparable in terms of star power. At this point one thing is clear, the fight won’t happen unless Dana starts talking serious money.
