Mayans MC is only a few weeks away from debuting its first season on FX. The network has already released a few trailers for Kurt Sutter’s latest show, and cast members recently sat down and talked about what fans can expect from the Sons of Anarchy spin-off — including which characters from the original show might be back in action.
The cast and crew of Mayans MC opened up about Season 1 during San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. The spin-off takes place after the events in Sons of Anarchy, which means Mayans MC will kick off after Jax Teller’s (Charlie Hunnam) death, and focuses on the story of JD Pardo’s character, EZ Reyes.
When asked about the differences between the two shows, Pardo admitted that there are comparisons between Jax and EZ.
“I see how easy it is to make that comparison,” Pardo explained at Comic-Con on Saturday. “But it’s different circumstances.”
Pardo explained how Jax was pretty much born into the motorcycle gang culture and was the “prince in this kingdom.” While Jax felt at home in the motorcycle culture, EZ had different plans for his life.
According to TV Line, Pardo shared how EZ wanted to get an education at Stanford and ultimately achieve the American dream. But all of that got taken away from him and he’s now struggling to forge a new identity with the club.
In addition to Pardo, executive producer Elgin James talked about how Mayans MC will pay tribute to Sons of Anarchy is some way. James did not go into too many specifics about what we can expect, but he did hint that the series will feature a few surprise cameos from Sons of Anarchy. We do not know which characters will return, aside from Emilio Rivera, who is reprising his role as Mayans MC president Marcus Alvarez.
Apart from the cast interviews, FX released another trailer for Mayans MC at San Diego Comic-con. The clip offers an extended look at the first season and EZ’s journey to becoming a full-fledged member of the club.
It also reveals that there will be plenty of drama and violence, which is not a major departure from the original series. The only thing missing is an appearance from Sons of Anarchy’s Hunnam, who will not be back in action as Jax Teller.
The first season of Mayans MC is scheduled to premiere on FX Sept. 4.
