Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter wasn’t messing around at the recent ATX Television Festival in Austin last week. Sutter and Mayans MC co-creator Elgin James appeared at a panel at the event with 13 cast members of the spin-off, including executive producer Norberto Barba. Among a slew of topics, Sutter and his crew talked about how Mayans MC will forge its own identity when it premieres on FX later this year.
Apart from Sutter and James, Mayans MC stars JD Pardo, Sarah Bolger, Clayton Cardenas, Richard Cabral, Carla Baratta, Emilio Rivera, Antonio Jaramillo, Michael Irby, Danny Pino, Raoul Trujillo, Vincent Vargas, Frankie Loyal and Joseph Lucero were all in attendance.
Sutter opened by talking about how he first thought of making a spin-off during Season 3 of Sons of Anarchy. While Sutter is happy about returning to his biker universe he doesn’t want it to devolve into a Latino version of Sons.
According to Deadline, Sutter plans on tying the two shows together and acknowledging everything Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) did at the end of Sons. But he wants to avoid Mayans MC becoming a carbon copy of its original and instead have the spin-off become its own thing.
To that end, Sutter realized that he needed to bring in other people who were not “a white guy from Jersey” to tell the right story about Latino culture. So far, Sutter believes James and Barba have done just that.
“The thing I love about this cast is that they have more jail time than screen time,” he explained. “It’s a different f**king energy on set — the level of gratitude is great.”
Mayans MC will pick up several years after Jax’s death in Season 7 of Sons. The show is set in a town on the border of California and Mexico and will follow the story of a young prospect named EZ Reyes, played by Pardo. EZ is attempting to gain the trust and respect of his gang while dealing with his own past life.
Kurt Sutter also talked about how politics will play a role in the spin-off. The Sons creator explained how he wants to steer clear of political talk in the series, though some subjects will naturally come up from time to time. He also teased that a few familiar faces from the original series will appear at some point down the road.
Mayans MC is set to premiere on FX this fall.
