At the Third Annual City Gala, Matthew McConaughey was named this year’s Inspirational Honoree, and when he took the stage to deliver his acceptance speech, the actor decided to pay tribute to his lovely wife, Camila Alves. Check out his sweet words!
‘The biggest thing I am grateful for now in my life is three healthy children and a wife who does not want to change me. Thank you, Camila. That is something to be thankful for, right? There is nobody else I would rather be here with,’ he said.
The award was given to him for the work on the ‘just keep livin Foundation.’
The organization was founded by him along with his wife back in 2015, and its goal is to empower students of high school age, giving them the proper tools that would help them live active lives and make all of the right choices for their own future.
The actor opened up about the tragic moment that inspired him to create this organization.
‘In 1992, I am five days into my first film, Dazed and Confused. I get a call from my mother one night saying, ‘Matt, your dad has passed away. I went home immediately, was home for two days, we had the wake, we had the tears, and then my family said, ‘Get back to work.’ I was trying to figure out how to maintain a relationship with my dad spiritually, even though physically he was no longer here and it hit me one night.’
‘I did not come up with it – it came from up above and said, ‘Well, you keep the spirit alive, man. You got to just keep livin’.’ So, I was like, OK, there it is. I have lost him physically, but I still spiritually have a connection with him and can talk to him anytime I want to, and that is where, ‘Just keep livin’ came from,’ he shared.
The phrase started to be a big part of his life, not only naming the foundation that but also putting it on pretty much everything, from ‘T-shirts and dog bowls to wristbands’ and now he can proudly say that 98 percent of the teens that joined the program graduated high school.
