Disgraced former Today Show anchor Matt Lauer is trying to find his way out of the gutter after NBC fired him last fall because of allegations of sexual misconduct in the workplace, and he is turning to his former co-host Katie Couric for help. Radar Online is reporting that the two former co-workers are “quietly bonding,” and are closer than people realize.
“Matt’s been putting in strategy calls to Katie, and she’s giving him tons of advice in both his personal life and career,” says an insider.
Lauer’s career isn’t just in freefall, it’s basically non-existent after a slew of sexual assault allegations forced him out of his $25 million a year gig. But after sitting next to him for 15 years on the Today Show couch, Couric is sympathetic to his troubles, and recently said that she had “a wonderful working relationship” with the 60-year-old.

The source claims that Couric still has a soft spot for Lauer and would like to see him make a comeback. She is also apparently telling friends that she believes he is sorry for his actions. Lauer did apologize in a statement he issued after the allegations went public, and he also wrote that he regretted that the people he cherishes had to share his shame.
Lauer said that there are no words that can express his sorrow and regret for the pain his words and actions caused. He added that some of the things people said about him were untrue or a mischaracterization, but he did admit that there was enough truth in the accusations that made him feel embarrassed and ashamed.
Couric did reveal that on several occasions Lauer used to pinch her butt, but she wants to put that behind her. He did it, and it used to annoy her, but she would like people to think she was joking.

Since NBC terminated him, Lauer has remained silent and laid low in his Hamptons home, but he is planning a comeback, and it could be as a documentary movie producer. Another insider says that Lauer believes it could win him back some credibility and trust that he lost. But, people are saying he is “delusional.”
As for his personal life, it looks like Matt Lauer and his wife Annette Roque are headed for a $100 million divorce, but they will try to do it quietly instead of playing it out in the press. And, they will likely keep things as civil as possible for the sake of their three kids.
