Letting go of his high-profile lifestyle seems to be too much for disgraced former Today show host Matt Lauer to handle, and reports are surfacing that he is ready for a comeback just weeks after NBC fired him for sexual misconduct. Is the restless Lauer already looking for another network gig?
According to Hollywood Life, Lauer misses the spotlight of being on national TV every morning, and the stay-at-home dad life isn’t working for him.
“Matt is quickly becoming bored with his new suburban routine,” reveals an insider, “and he is already thinking about making a comeback.”
Lauer is reportedly reaching out to his old colleagues and wants to get back on TV as soon as possible, but those close to him have advised the 60-year-old that it is too soon for any kind of redemption tour.
Even though it isn’t likely that any network would touch him at this point, Lauer is determined to regain a seat on a national morning show. He has had a hard time letting go of his job at Today and has sent producers emails with suggestions, comments, and criticism of things like music choices in segments.

Per Page Six, his former co-workers at the popular morning news program aren’t thrilled with Lauer’s attempts to still be involved with the show that he hosted for twenty years.
Immediately after NBC fired him on November 29th, Lauer planned to lay low at his Hamptons estate and play golf. But, it seems that plan has changed, and the father of three wants to get back to work.
One thing is for sure, Lauer will not get his old job back since NBC recently announced that Hoda Kotb will be his permanent replacement. However, there has been some controversy surrounding the hire since she will be making considerably less money than Lauer’s $25 million a year.

Vanity Fair reports that Kotb signed on for a salary of $7 million and some are viewing the disparity in pay to be a prime example of sexism in the workplace. The optics aren’t good for NBC having two female co-anchors of Today whose combined salaries are less than their disgraced former colleague. Savannah Guthrie also reportedly earns $7 million a year.
Of course Matt Lauer made more money than Savannah and Hoda. HE WAS THERE FOR 25 YEARS. Sexual deviant or not, that’s how any job works. Focus, people.

But, there is a valid reason for the difference. Lauer hosted the show for two decades and would renegotiate his contract often. It is rare for new hires to get the same money as their departing predecessor.
Both Kotb and Guthrie will have the chance to renegotiate for higher salaries when their contracts expire, and it will be interesting to see what NBC does in that situation – especially since the women have earned higher ratings since Matt Lauer’s departure and are consistently beating out Good Morning America.
