John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are like most married couples, except they’re also Hollywood big names in acting and directing. Trying their hand at working together and conceptualizing a film from the back end, the two debuted their new thriller A Quiet Place at this weekend’s South By Southwest Film Festival.
Krasinski revealed that the film became an idea after the two welcomed their second child into the world. He says he was already so terrified so the concept of making that fear into something tangible that he could then display with his wife became an interesting endeavor.
The two play a married couple in the film who aren’t allowed to make any type of noise or something terrible happens to them.
This genre is an interesting choice for Krasinski because he doesn’t even watch horror films because he’s too scared.
He does reveal that he was inspired by thrillers like Jaws and Alien. Krasinski talks about the scary entity of the film being a bit of a secondary element; the real focus is on the family.
Krasinski likens it to wanting to protect your children from all the darkness and hate out in the world. Knowing there are things you can’t always keep them from and that terrifying you.
As far as working with his movie star wife, Blunt, Krasinski felt honored that she agreed to do the film, saying it was the best compliment he has had in his directorial career.
Blunt says she didn’t know what to expect the day before their first day on set. Naturally, the way a husband and wife interact is much different than a director and actor. She wanted to ensure that they could give each other the space and autonomy that any other actor and director enjoy.
It seemed to work out just fine as they both speak highly of the film and of their experience working together on it.
During the Q&A panel held after the movie played, a fan asked Krasinski if he ever pinches himself when reminded he’s married to Blunt.
Krasinski good-naturedly responded that every day he has that experience. Which isn’t surprising considering he had a crush on her before they even met!
