Star Wars fans who didn’t like the tragic and strange end to Luke Skywalker’s character in The Last Jedi aren’t the only ones. In the newest installment of the popular franchise, it’s been discovered that Luke has been hiding and has given up entirely on the Jedi.
Mark Hamill, who portrayed Skywalker since the very beginning of the franchise, said to the director, Rian Johnson, that Luke’s demise didn’t make sense and he wasn’t a big fan of it.
Hamill explained to the Last Jedi director that “Jedi don’t give up,” and even if he did, Luke would take time off to figure out how to regroup and come out stronger in the end.
Mark conceded that the Star Wars movie is no longer his story anymore, it belongs to somebody else. Johnson needed Hamill to portray a particular character, and that’s what he did for the sake of the film.
Hamill continued, “Luke would never say that.” After Lucas Films sold the franchise to Disney for $4 billion back in 2012, many fans were concerned that the tone of the productions would change, and indeed it has, especially regarding Luke.
The goal is never to divide or make people upset, but I do think the conversations that are happening were going to have to happen at some point if sw is going to grow, move forward and stay vital.

Hamill thinks the new version is incredibly different from the ones created by George Lucas. He said he had to think of Luke as “Jake Skywalker,” and not “Luke,” because Luke is not the man he used to be. Mark said, “he’s not my Luke Skywalker.”
Furthermore, in another interview, Hamill said he wasn’t pleased with the way Skywalker turned out. He noted Jedi never hide from anything.
The whole purpose of the Jedi is to remain optimistic, hopeful, and capable of serving the forces of good. When people asked the director why he made the changes, he said the goal wasn’t to upset or divide fans. He just wanted to change the film so that Star Wars could “grow.” Check out the tweet above to see the original comment from Rian.
