Is M. Night Shyamalan back on top? This is what Hollywood is asking following the craze around ‘Split,’ his latest film featuring the excellent James McAvoy.
While his latest film seems to sit well with most critics and has been a success at the box office, the Indian director is preparing a sequel to one of his biggest hits.
Shyamalan will take advantage of this enthusiasm of the public to begin work on his next project. It will be a sequel to Unbreakable, a fantastic thriller released 17- years- ago, according to a report from Uproxx.
According to the director ‘Split’ takes place in the same universe as ‘Unbreakable’ – with the two stories being intertwined (no spoilers!)
In fact Shyamalan says the two movies are part of a realistic superhero trilogy.
It is not the first time that the director hinted at this possibility. For many years fans have been asking “when will you make a sequel?” And for many years his response was ‘maybe one day’.
The inspiration regarding the character of James McAvoy came to him by while writing Unbreakable. But the scene he had imagined was too intense compared to the rest of the film. So he preferred to dismiss it and made it a full-length feature many years later.
So will the new film be a sequel to ‘Split,’ or to ‘Unbreakable?’ The director revealed a little more to Empire earlier this week.
“However you want to look at it. Maybe it’s a new format, this movie, this movie and a final movie. I’m writing the outline now. It’s weird. It’s long. It’s the longest outline I’ve ever had. It has so many characters. I hope if ‘Split’ is a success, I’ll have the opportunity to finish the story. I want to finish it, so this is the third one.”
‘Split’ which was made for just $5-million took in $40-million during its first week at the box office.
