Lionsgate makes a surprising move and announces a pre-buy deal one after the other. The company has just won a huge action and will acquire and also distribute Kin. Kin is a science fiction thriller that will be featuring Dennis Quaid, Zoe Kravitz, Jack Reynor and James Franco. The news is even more surprising since just yesterday the company made a deal for a drama acquired by Focus Features, featuring Daniel Day-Lewis and being directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
Both these deals were negative pick-ups, for almost -$30 million, and the one directed by Paul Thomas-Anderson was hunted by TWC, MGM, Sony and Universal. The opportunity was presented so quickly that WME Global even canceled a presentation they had at Thomson Hall after the bidding started.
This movie is financed by No Trace Camping, company which also supported Room. Kin is currently in the pre-production stage and it’s going to be filmed in Toronto. Jonathan and Josh Baker are directing this feature, which is based on another short film they produced together called Bag Man. The script is written by Daniel Casey and in the production process there were lots of people involved, such as Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen from 21 Laps, Jeff Arkuss from No Trace Camping, along with David Gross and Jesse Shapira.
No Trace Camping is also taking care of Goon: Last of the Enforcers, which is a sequel directed by Jay Baruchel. Deadline showed the Kin package on August 30, and it should have been one of those popular pre-buy packages that have lots of fans. As of now, the picture is ready to go, and the starting date for the works on it is October 24.
Reynor will be playing the part of a released ex-con, along with his younger brother. Franco is here a criminal who chases Reynor.
