The rapper got candid about a very dark period of time and the most terrifying moment in his life. As Lil Wayne is getting ready to drop a new album, the first in the last three years, he is also opening up more about his life.
According to him, when he was only 12, he attempted to kill himself because his mother tried to stop him from rapping.
Talking to Billboard, Lil Wayne recalled how he shot himself in the chest at the very young age after finding a gun in his mom’s home.
He was lucky to survive as he barely missed his heart.
Before this Billboard cover story, the rapper played it off as an accident but now, in a verse he shared with Rys, he confesses that he tried to kill himself ‘undertaken after his mom told him he’d no longer be allowed to rap.’
The track in question samples Sampha’s ‘Indecision,’ and is apparently the upcoming album’s outro.
Wayne also reportedly added some new lyrics after the tragic suicides of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade.
‘He just told me one day that he was ready to address it now. Just being an adult and reaching a level of maturity and comfort where it is like, ‘I want to talk about it because I know a lot of people out there might be going through that too,’’ President of Young Money Entertainment, Mack Maine said.
After going through the near-death experience and recovering, Lil Wayne’s mother gave him permission to become a rapper but only if he never swore.
That is why his debut Tha Block Is Hot in 1999 has zero profanity.
