In an essay published in the March issue of Vogue, Lena Dunham opened up about her health struggles and her hysterectomy to remove her uterus and cervix for the sake of ending her pain related to endometriosis. The 31-year-old actress talked about her condition once again and revealed her harrowing experiences with it.
After “years of complex surgeries measuring in the double digits,” Dunham finally concluded that the hysterectomy was necessary. The pain and frustration were too much to bear.
As the doctors worked on her, they discovered more issues were lying underneath the surface. She stated she has “retrograde bleeding” and her stomach is “full of blood.”
Mostly, her period is “running in reverse,” rather than exiting the standard way. Despite all of the bad news, the organ is “shaped like a heart.”
Dunham revealed the muscles around the sacral nerves that allow her to walk are interrupted by her ovaries. The entire area is surrounded by scar tissue, making her question if having a child is even a possibility.
As you may know, Dunham wrote an essay back in April of 2017 stating she was “disease- free,” but it was far from over. During the Met Gala in May of 2017, she had to go to the hospital and cancel her speaking tour.
Additionally, she and Jack Antonoff split up after five years of dating, and she is entirely unable to have a baby through traditional means.
Even though she can’t conceive a child as other women can, she is still interested and considers things like adoption. She said, “adoption is a thrilling truth I’ll pursue with all my might.” If she does go down that path, Lena won’t be the only one. As you may know, Kim Kardashian had a baby through a surrogacy this year as well.
