Fox News host Laura Ingraham will be off the air next week amid a backlash stemming from a poor joke she delivered on social media about David Hogg, a Florida student who survived the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in February.
The high school student has become an activist for gun control after the tragedy. This has turned him into a target for critics on the right.
Here is the condescending tweet that got Ingraham in trouble in the first place.
Any student should be proud of a 4.2 GPA —incl. @DavidHogg111. On reflection, in the spirit of Holy Week, I apologize for any upset or hurt my tweet caused him or any of the brave victims of Parkland. For the record, I believe my show was the first to feature David…(1/2)

Hogg then launched a campaign against the conservative commentator and urged some major advertisers to boycott her primetime show.
His move quickly went viral, and advertisers started to dump Ingraham which promoted an apology from the right-leaning TV personality.

Hogg, sensing that he had become the one in the driving seat, decided to reject the apology and kept going on the offense.
The activist wrote on Twitter: “I 100% agree an apology in an effort just to save your advertisers is not enough. I will only accept your apology only if you denounce the way your network has treated my friends and I in this fight. It’s time to love thy neighbor, not mudsling at children.”
Ingraham’s supporters launched the #IStandWithLaura to save their favorite TV pundit. It garnered a lot of attention, but not enough to dissipate the controversy.
One supporter reacted to the backlash by saying: “Next time I take a trip, we will nt use ur co.. U caved 2a bunch of “kids” who r acting like “adults” w/profanity laced stmts, insults,n threats, yet want 2b treated like “kids” when their criticized 4it? ur stomping all ovr r 1st & 2ndA. #StandWithLauraIngraham.”
Another one added: “I can’t boycott the sponsors who dropped #LauraIngraham to #StandWithLauraIngraham because I don’t use any of them. I only found out who they are on twitter because I don’t have cable. This bullshit makes me want to get it so I can watch her to shut this #DavidHogg asshole up.”
According to the latest reports, Fox News opted to give the host a little break in the face of the media scrutiny.
Late Friday night, Ingraham, 54, announced: “A blessed Good Friday and Passover to all of you; I’ll be off next week for Easter break with my kids.”
This situation reminded observers of what happened with former Fox News star Bill O’Reilly who went on pre-planned vacation and never returned to the O’Reilly Factor amid accusations of sexual harassment by old colleagues.
Despite some similarities, many believe that Ingraham is in a better position and is unlikely to get fired, at least not in the near future.
UPDATE: FOX News spokesperson reached out and noted that the vacation was pre-planned.
