It’s been a tough few days on the set of The CW hit Riverdale, but things seem to be getting back to normal for the cast and crew after star KJ Apa crashed his car after a 16-hour workday.
Apa’s co-stars Cole Sprouse and Camila Mendes posted pictures on their social media accounts, and the recovery seems to be going well. Sprouse featured a picture of Apa, who plays the red-headed Archie Andrews, wearing a Jughead hat and Mendes posted a picture of Apa lying on the ground looking at his phone with the caption “U good?”
Last week, KJ Apa fell asleep at the wheel during the 45-minute drive back to his hotel and crashed into a light pole. He did not suffer any injuries, but the damage to his car left it inoperable. First responders took Apa to the hospital, where doctors treated the 20-year-old actor before releasing him without injury the next morning. Apa returned to work later that day.
The accident has called into question the workplace conditions on the set of Riverdale; a Warner Brothers produced version of the classic Archie Comics, as well as other Hollywood productions. The cast and crew are now demanding improvements, but Warner Brothers insist they follow all industry regulations.
In a statement, a studio spokesman said, “The safety of the cast and crew on all of our productions is of paramount importance to the Studio. Productions adhere to the Screen Actors Guild–mandated turnaround time of 12 hours from wrap time to next day call time for cast members. In accordance with industry standard policy, if any cast or crew member feels tired or unsafe at any time after working, the Studio will provide a taxi, a driver or a hotel room upon request. This is communicated to all cast and crew, both in writing and verbally, at the beginning of production and is reiterated continuously throughout the duration of production.”
Quite a few safety-related incidents in Hollywood have made the headlines this summer. In July, a stuntman fell to his death on the set of The Walking Dead, and in August a motorcycle racer died after a fatal crash on the Deadpool 2 set.
According to multiple sources, some on the Riverdale set are feeling uneasy and angry, because of the grueling work schedule and the possible consequences of working such long hours. Some actors on the set have even confronted producers about the transportation policy.
SAG-AFTRA, the actor’s union, promised to investigate conditions on the Riverdale set, which is located in Vancouver.
Riverdale is one of the most popular shows on The CW and has an incredibly strong fan base. So popular, in fact, that the network announced this week the companion show The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is in development.
Season 2 of Riverdale premieres October 11, on The CW.
