The 17 people arrested on Monday in connection with the investigation into the robbery of Kim Kardashian in Paris in October were still in police custody on Tuesday, police sources said.
In the framework of this open investigation for “organized armed robbery”, in addition to “conspiracy” and “sequestration”, police custody can be extended to 96 hours.
These arrests were carried out under the direction of the Paris Police Brigade (BRB) Monday morning in the capital, Val-de-Marne, in Seine-et-Marne, Seine-Saint-Denis, in Alpes-Maritimes and Gard.
Suspected of being directly involved in the robbery of the star or having participated in the sale of jewelry, “almost all are known to police ,” a source told CNN on Monday.
The youngest was born in January 1994 and the oldest, arrested in Grasse (Alpes-Maritimes), is 72 years old, said a judicial source.
According to French investigators, Kardashian’s limo driver is among those held in police custody. He could have indicated that the bodyguard had been absent and informed accomplices on the spot, said the source.
Three women, including a 65-year-old, were also arrested during the raid, according to police .
With Kim Kardashian’s robbery estimated at nine million euros ($11 million USD), it is considered to be the largest jewelry theft committed in France in over 20 years.
