Let it be known that if Kim Kardashian has questions, the Internet has answers. On Monday, Kim took to her Twitter account to ask the public how it is she can film a video on her cell phone and the quality is clear, yet when she uploads it to social media the video becomes blurry. The tweet quickly went viral with more than 31,000 likes and thousands of people weighing in on Kim’s dilemma and offering solutions.
While Kim was serious about her question, some people chose to respond to memes, GIFs, and jokes. One man suggested that Kim take another phone and videotape her phone and then check the quality as she posts it on social media. For many though, the question was a serious one and people offered to explain the problem she was having.
Bryan Feldman of NY Magazine wrote a piece specifically addressing Kim’s problem. He said that the loss of quality is actually called “lossy compression.”
Essentially Feldman explained that the file must be compressed or made similar in order to be uploaded to the Internet. Though there are technical ways to upload a video without comprising the quality through compression, that isn’t the way people typically share videos on social media.
Because of the lossy compression, the video loses quality during the upload process.
Wait why is a video so clear on my phone but when I upload to social media it gets blurry?

There’s no question that video quality is an important aspect of Kim Kardashian’s social media persona. Kim has built an empire based on her reality television series KUWK, has her own beauty line and has millions of fans who wait to see her latest selfies and newest videos.
Due to the necessity of having fast uploads, most social media platforms won’t let you choose the quality or format for video uploads. It is recommended to film your videos in the highest quality possible, then upload them to a high-speed WiFi connection. The way you view videos that have been uploaded will also impact the quality of the playback.
Always view videos with a high bandwidth and fast Internet connection. Those who view videos online and are limited data may find their videos are blurred.
