At the beginning of her career, singer and actress Keri Hilson was well known for writing hit songs. It wasn’t until around 2009 where her own musical career started taking off.
Hilson opened up about her personal struggles regarding her own mental health and what caused her to take a break from the limelight.
Hilson had a couple of really great hits that featured superstar rappers such as Lil Wayne and Kanye West in 2009, like “Turnin’ Me On” and “Knock You Down.”
For all intents and purposes, it seemed like this once successful songwriter was ready to break out into mainstream music as a performer with a really strong career.
After the painful breakup of an 11-year relationship and what she deems as some “personal and professional mistakes,” Hilson hit what she would refer to as “rock bottom.”
There has been speculation for years that the professional mistake she is referring to was when she publically trashed Beyonce.
Despite her star rising at that time, her criticisms of Beyonce seemed to stop it dead in its tracks.
Beyonce fans are known to be fierce and loyal to the Queen B, and after what Hilson said, she pretty much got trolled on social media for a very long time and her singing career all but came to a complete halt.
Hilson struggled severely with depression in the wake of these incidences and she’s finally opening up about what it feels like to battle your own demons and struggle with mental health for so long.
Hilson says she was at the top of her career, that professionally things were going so well but that she had this huge weight and cloud over her that she couldn’t escape.
Her actions reflected that feeling and since then she’s been trying to climb out of the abyss. The singer-actress says that now she prioritizes self-care and checks in with herself often to manage her depression.
Hilson has been seen in some smaller budget films and seems to have found her stride with acting. No word if she’s ever going to give music a go again or if that ship has sailed forever.
