The Voice star Kelly Clarkson has struggled with her weight over the years, and it has led to body shaming from the media and fans. But the pop star recently lost forty pounds, and she opened up about the dramatic weight loss in a new interview, admitting it had nothing to do with exercise.
According to OK! Magazine, Clarkson revealed that she has a thyroid disorder that started in 2006, and it has caused her major weight fluctuation.
“I literally read this book, and I did it for this autoimmune disease that I had and I had a thyroid issue, and now all my levels are back up,” the singer said. “I’m not on medicine anymore because of this book.”
The book Clarkson is referring to is The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in “Healthy” Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain by cardiac surgeon Steven R. Gundry. She says that it is about how we cook our food, avoiding pesticides and GMOs, and eating organic.
Clarkson says she still eats food like fried chicken and cake, but she makes sure to cook with ingredients like tapioca or almond flour. She also said that it is expensive to cook this way, and she wishes that the government would “back humanity” because it is hard to find.
The 36-year-old added that she was poor growing up and there was no way her family could have afforded to eat this way. But, it has helped her health, and her autoimmune disease is gone.
In the book, Gundry writes about how gluten and plant-based proteins called lectins – which you can find in healthy food like grains, nuts, fruits, and veggies – cause inflammatory reactions in the body and they can lead to weight gain and other health problems.
Some doctors have dismissed Gundry’s claims and say that it is nothing more than a fad diet that has no scientific evidence to back it up.
But, it has worked for Clarkson, and the Because of You singer says that she hasn’t been exercising, so her weight loss is because of her change in diet. She says it is all about understanding food and what we do to our food, like spraying pesticides and genetically-modifying.
Clarkson’s new body was on full display on The Voice finale where she joked,” I have to shout out my whole glam squad. I literally hired Harry Potter and SPANX; it’s all like a sausage.”
In a May interview with People Magazine, Kelly Clarkson said that her glam squad is “insane,” and she feels like it’s the “mom makeover on the Today show.” She says she walks in and then she walks out, and she’s like “Damn!” Clarkson says she would love to take credit, but it’s all because of her team.
