Kelly explained why she was refusing to do a moment of silence as follows.
“Tonight, they wanted me to say, obviously we want to pray for all the victims, we want to pray for their families, but they also wanted me to do a moment of silence. And I’m so sick of moments of silence. It’s not working, like, obviously.
“So why don’t we not [sic] do a moment of silence? Why don’t we do a moment of action? Why don’t we do a moment of change? Why don’t we change what’s happening, because it’s horrible?”
Kelly concluded her speech by reiterating that a moment of silence is not working and encouraged those watching to make an active change in their communities. She also stated people need to “do better.”
According to the response on social media networks, people are responding to Kelly’s message and are motivated to see gun laws change so that children can once again be safe.
