In 1997, filmmaker James Cameron made Kate Winslet a household name with his blockbuster film, Titanic. Now, 20 years later, Winslet is reteaming with Cameron to help kick off a string of sequels to his other blockbuster film, Avatar.
Winslet will have a starring role in the four upcoming Avatar sequels as “Ronal,” although there are no details on who her character actually is.
“Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career,” says Cameron. “I can’t wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life.”
Upon its release, Titanic was the highest-grossing film of all time, winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards and earning Winslet a nomination for Best Actress.
Titanic held onto that box office record until 2009 when Cameron’s 3D magnum opus, Avatar, arrived in theaters to steal the crown.
As for Winslet, she eventually took home an Oscar for 2008’s The Reader, after earning five prior nominations.
Since then, she’s also managed to earn a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the 2015 film, Steve Jobs.
Cameron has been writing and planning his follow-ups to Avatar for years now, with pre-production alone taking several years.
The four sequels are filming back-to-back and recently began production in Manhattan Beach, CA starting September 25.
Winslet’s new film, The Mountain Between Us, based on the 2011 novel by Charles Martin and co-starring Idris, hits theaters this Friday.
Next up for Winslet is Woody Allen’s Wonder Wheel, with Jim Belushi and Justin Timberlake, opening on December 1.
Original Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, C. C. H. Pounder, and Matt Gerald are all expected to return for the sequels. The release dates for the follow-ups are December 18, 2020, December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024, and December 19, 2025.
