Kate Spade’s life was tumbling out of control long before she decided to commit suicide. Fashion sources claim that the designer had a major problem with alcohol that ultimately led to the demise of her marriage and her shocking death this week.
Spade was tragically found dead inside her Park Ave. house on Tuesday. The handbag expert hanged herself with a scarf and was discovered by the family’s housekeeper. Spade left a suicide note that made police believe her failed marriage was the reason she decided to end her life.
According to Page Six, Spade and her husband, Andy Spade, had split six months prior to her death. Inside sources say that Spade’s drinking problem destroyed her marriage and ultimately led to her demise. But alcohol was not the only thing Spade was dealing with prior to her suicide.
#KateSpade reportedly left behind a tragic suicide note for daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade — "Bea – I have always loved you. This is not your fault. Ask Daddy!" This is so heartbreaking! ? #mentalillness is a serious social problem and we, as a society, must learn how to help a loved one through diagnosis. Bipolar disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and major depressive disorder are all treatable and anyone diagnosed with these diseases can live full, rewarding lives, especially if they seek treatment as needed. If you’re concerned a friend or family member is exhibiting obvious signs, please encourage your loved one to talk to a trusted health care provider before it's too late.
Spade’s sister, Reta Saffo, revealed that she had mental health issues as well as alcoholism. Saffo says that Spade dealt with those problems for years and that Andy only recently decided to break things off. In fact, Andy attempted to get Spade help for her substance abuse, but his plans eventually fell through.
Andy has categorically denied Saffo’s claims. He says that Spade was seeing doctors because she had anxiety. He also claims that Spade was on medication at the time of her death and that she never abused drugs or alcohol. Although they were no longer living under the same roof, Andy was adamant that divorce was not on the table.
Sources, however, contradict Andy’s comments and claim that both parties were preparing for a divorce. They even allegedly had lawyers lined up and were on the verge of filing in court. Close friends of the family also revealed that Andy and Spade liked to keep their private matters out of the public eye, which could explain Andy’s comments.

“They seemed to be the perfect, happy family,” a friend explained. “Nobody knows what’s going on with someone. When the doors close, you never know.”
Spade mentioned her daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade, in the suicide note. The designer assured the 13-year-old that she had nothing to do with her decision to end her life. Instead, Spade told Frances to “ask your dad.”
Kate Spade and Andy were married for 24 years and shared one child together. The family has not issued an official statement regarding Spade’s tragic suicide.
