America’s sweetheart, who’s had an acting career that has spanned decades is now choosing to take her talents to television, more specifically to a streaming service. Julia Roberts stars in the new Amazon Prime series Homecoming, which is based on a popular podcast of the same name.
This marks a real win that Amazon has had as they enter deeper into the media streaming business with powerhouse giants such as Netflix, Hulu, and Apple.
A teaser for the psychological thriller, which stars the 50-year-old Oscar winner, was played during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con.
Homecoming will follow the main character Heidi Bergman, played by Roberts, who works as a caseworker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center where soldiers frequent in order to transition back into the life of a civilian.
The teaser goes through numerous rooms and spaces that seem pristine and even untouched as the camera finally settles on Roberts, who is dressed professionally, holding a notepad.
She utters one question: “Shall we get started?”
Part of the enticing and interesting part of this series is that it begins with Roberts character four years after she has left her job and position under circumstances that are unclear to both the audience and some of the characters in the show.
The show’s cast includes Stephan James, Bobby Cannavale, Sissy Spacek, Alex Karpovsky, Jeremy Allen White, Sha Whigham and Dermot Mulroney.
The series is created by Sam Esmail, who is known for his critically acclaimed series Mr. Robot, which is soon entering into its fourth season.
Homecoming will be available through Amazon Prime in November.
Other successful shows on that streaming service are Mozart In The Jungle, Sneaky Pete, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
There is no doubt Roberts will bring her formidable acting chops to this role in spades.
