Johnny Depp is definitely appreciative of his loyal friends that stay by his side no matter what.
On Wednesday, the 2017 People’s Choice Awards took place and the actor won in the competitive Favorite Movie Icon category.
Going on the stage to receive his trophy, the star could not help but pour his heart out to the audience.
“I came here for one reason tonight, for one reason and one reason only, for you, the people. Through whatever good times or bad you’ve stood by me and trusted me.”
“You very graciously invited me here once again tonight so I appreciate that very much. You have no idea how much I appreciate it.”
After months of scandals and media coverage that could have changed his public image however, Depp’s divorce from Amber Heard was finalized, less than a week ago, as the former couple reached an agreement.
The divorce documents were initially filed in May 2016 and both Depp and Heard were forced to have their split play out in the public eye. People chose sides and loved to speculate what actually happened between the two.
Johnny Depp seemed to finally be moving on from the tumultuous divorce and addressed the movie goers who honored him with such an award despite the domestic abuse accusations.
The audience even cheered loudly, shouting “I love you!” while Depp clutched the three safety pins he had in his left ear out of nervousness and uncertainty of what would be best to say in the moment. The actor struggled to find his words while the cheers continued.
“I’m very deeply affected by the kindness of your well wishes,” he finally started. “It’s especially meaningful to me to be here in front of you to say thank you and to tell you that I truly feel that need to thank you.”
“Because in all honesty we all know we wouldn’t be standing up here tonight if it weren’t for you.”
“Give ‘em hell, Betty Sue,” Depp finally said as a tribute to his mother.
Betty Sue passed away in May and, according to Depp, “she was a hellcat.”
