Former United States Senator John McCain has lost the fight, reports The New York Times. The politician who was suffering from brain cancer passed away today at the age of 81.
He reportedly spent his final moments in his own home in Arizona.
His office has released an official statement that claims he passed away surrounded by his family, including his wife Cindy at around 8:30 P.M. today.
The man got diagnosed with a very aggressive form of brain cancer, known as glioblastoma back in July of 2017.
But after over a year of fighting for his life, McCain’s family revealed earlier this week that he had decided to put an end to his treatment.
‘Last summer, Senator John McCain shared with Americans the news our family already knew: he had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, and the prognosis was serious. In the year since, John’s surpassed all expectations for survival. But the progress of the disease and the advance of age render their verdict,’ the statement reveals.

It went on to say that ‘With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment. Our family is immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the last year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John’s many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers. God bless and thank you all.’
The former senator has left behind his wife Cindy and five children – Bridget, 27, James, 30, John, 32, Meghan, 33 and Sidney, 50.
Rest in peace, John McCain.
